Christian von Koenigsegg has spent three decades proving that extreme low-volume manufacturing can produce not just extraordinary cars, but a coherent business model. From a facility in Angelholm, Sweden, the company builds only a handful of cars each year, yet the Jesko shows how deeply a small manufacturer can outthink much larger rivals when every engineering decision is allowed to stay ambitious.
Why 125 Units
The Jesko is limited to 125 examples of the Attack variant and 125 of the Absolut. All 250 cars were sold before production began. The price — $2.8 million for the Attack — reflects not only the specification but the manufacturing reality: at this volume, the cost of developing proprietary systems can only be recovered across a small number of units, and the work hours involved in building each car cannot be reduced without compromising the quality that justifies the price.
The Light Speed Transmission, developed entirely in-house, is illustrative. The nine-speed, multi-clutch unit can change gear in under two milliseconds — faster than any conventional dual-clutch system. It does not pre-select the next gear; it can shift to any gear from any gear without intermediate steps. The development cost of this transmission, spread across 125 units, makes its per-car contribution to the vehicle price significant. At 125 units, it is commercially viable. At 15,000 units, it would be priced out of the market.
The 1,600-Horsepower Flat-Plane V8
The Jesko uses a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter flat-plane V8 that produces 1,280 horsepower on standard gasoline and 1,600 horsepower on E85. The flat-plane crankshaft — shared with some Ferrari V8s but unusual for this displacement — enables higher rev limits and better exhaust pulse separation. The engine revs to 8,500 rpm and produces a sound character that no other manufacturer's V8 matches.
The Absolut and the 300 mph Target
The Absolut variant is optimized for top speed rather than downforce. Koenigsegg has stated that the theoretical top speed exceeds 330 mph, making it the first production car designed to exceed 300 mph. Verification at this speed requires a track long enough for the run — a logistics challenge that has not yet been resolved. The engineering basis for the claim is sound; the practical demonstration is pending.
What the Jesko represents in business terms is a proof of concept for ultra-low-volume manufacturing at the edge of automotive technology. It demonstrates that the traditional relationship between development cost, production volume, and selling price can be renegotiated — provided the product is exceptional enough that buyers accept its terms.
